The Great Resignation has opened up the door, as Mel C would say, to a brand new dynamic between employers and employees – and it looks like there’s no going back.
There are a number of lessons every employer should have learned from the Great Resignation – a phenomenon that predicted 60% of people would quit their jobs this year.
Again, if you’re a Vivowire regular, you’ll know that we like to try and make sense of the working world through the medium of song. (If you’re new here, you’re in for a treat.) Well, this week’s issue is no different. This time we’re drawing on Melanie C’s number-one hit, Never Be The Same Again.

There are lots of reasons employees leave their jobs. With respect to the Great Resignation in particular, some of the biggest contributors have been a lack of appreciation and recognition, not feeling valued, poor company culture, not being kept informed, and emotional disconnect.
These issues have left workers wanting more, changing the employer-employee relationship forever – just like Mel and her mystery love.
As the song goes…
It’s not a secret anymore
Now we’ve opened up the door
Starting tonight and from now on
We’ll never, never be the same again
So what exactly has changed? The pandemic has given people the space to take a step back and really consider what they want out of their careers. Some of the top contenders are flexibility, a better work-life balance, and a great company culture.
It stands to reason, then, that organizations will need to make some changes themselves, starting with prioritizing flexibility. They’ll also need to invest more in supporting employee development and driving productive, two-way conversations.
In general, they’ll need to actively listen to their employees’ needs and take action where they can. This is a win-win for leaders and their teams, as making sure people are happy is a sure way of keeping them in the company.
Even Sporty Spice knows it’s a no-brainer.
And as our energies mix and begin to multiply
Everyday situations, they start to simplify
So things will never be the same between you and I
We intertwined our life forces and now we’re unified
Leaders need to take action in response to the Great Resignation if they want to make the most of this new employer-employee dynamic, which looks like it’s here to stay (despite what you may have heard about a ‘Great Regret’).
Need a motivation boost to get the ball rolling? I recommend listening to the Spice Girls discography in its entirety.
Take us away, Mel…
It’s just the beginning, not the end
Things will never be the same again
